Five Easy Ways to Lose Weight

lose weight effortlessly

Reader’s Digest recently had a great story called 50 Easy Ways to Lose Weight.  Even though losing weight is not rocket science – ultimately you just have to burn more calories than you consume – the tips the publication presented were great.  Here are our top 5 – with a slightly different take.  We highly encourage you to read the original article to find even more ideas.

Eat fat releasing foods that have fewer calories to lose weight

Did you know that a hard-boiled egg has only 70 calories?  If you are diabetic, having a couple of eggs and getting great quality protein first thing in the morning, may help stabilize your blood sugar as well.  And, how about  A dozen shrimps will set you back only 60 calories!

Make water your drink of choice to lose weight

The average American gets almost 250 calories from soft drinks per day.  This amounts to 7350 calories per month.  Every pound of fat you want to lose requires that you reduce your caloric intake by 3500 calories.  So, even though people in Vancouver probably drink fewer soft drinks a day than Americans, you can still lose at least a pound per month simply by replacing them with water.  If you don’t like water, how about carbonated water with flavors?  Perrier with lime, perhaps?  Avoid diet drinks because of the various controversial chemicals.

Eat More Often To Lose Lots of Weight

Yes, you heard me right.  If you eat 5-6 smaller meals or snacks every day instead of three large meals, your chances of losing weight go up.  Even if the total calorie count is the same, the high frequency of meals causes your body to release less insulin, keeping blood glucose levels steady and helping control your hunger!

This is often easier said than done.  But, what if you just reduce the number of sugary snacks, or the amount of rice you eat with your Chinese or Thai food?  If you eat cookies, what if you ate one less cookie a day?  How about checking out how many calories does your favorite chocolate bar have and replacing it with a one with 100 fewer calories.  Again, 100 calories a day can save you about 3000 per month, which amounts to 11-12 pounds weight loss per year!

Cut Portion Sizes — Yes, It Does Help to Lose Weight

This is often easier said than done.  But, what if you just reduce the number of sugary snacks, or the amount of rice you eat with your Chinese or Thai food?  If you eat cookies, what if you ate one less cookie a day?  How about checking out how many calories does your favorite chocolate bar have and replacing it with a one with 100 fewer calories.  Again, 100 calories a day can save you about 3000 per month, which amounts to 11-12 pounds weight loss per year!

Chew Well — Chewing Can Help You Lose Weight

Many of us lead busy lives and tend to eat very fast.  This typically leads to overeating.  Your brain lags your stomach by about twenty minutes when it comes to reaching a sensation of fullness.  If you eat slower, the signal from your stomach may reach your brain before you have finished your meal.  And, by taking the time to chew well, you make it easier for your body to digest your food.

As you can see, even small changes can make a big difference.  Especially people who need to lose 10, 20, 50, 100 or even more pounds, consider it easily an overwhelming task.  And yet, a few simple changes in your eating habits and incorporating just a little bit of extra exercise, even if it were just light walking can make a huge difference.  Best of all, you don’t have to focus on losing weight.

It just happens!
